Yoga is always a great way to balance your mind and body no matter how much of a yogi you are (or aren’t). CorePower Yoga is just one of the many yoga franchises that have popped up in the past few years, and all of their classes seek to improve flexibility, strength, and balance. Whether you’re a beginner or a more seasoned yogi, enjoy the heat or hate it, are looking to gain strength or are more focused on flexibility, you’ll be able to find a class for you at CorePower.
THE SWEAT SCALE
If you want to find inner peace, stretch, intensely sweat and tone your body, then head on over to CorePower Yoga. While each class is different, you’ll always be working hard whether its with weights, heat, or extended poses.
The Buckhead, North Druid Hills and Ponce City Market studios offer four different types of yoga classes: CorePower 1, CorePower 2, Yoga Sculpt and Hot Power Fusion. CorePower 1 and 2 are vinyasa flow yoga, but because 2 is more advanced, they add heat and humidity for that extra sweat and calorie burn. The music for this class is more mellow to get you in a yogi state of mind, and because each instructor is different, you’ll never get the same class or playlist twice. Think yoga seems like an easier workout? Not so much. This class incorporates lots of core and leg work–think planks, lunges and lots of Chaturangas.
Yoga Sculpt takes yoga and meditation to the next level by adding in weights, cardio, heat and pop music for the ultimate toning class. The class begins with a yoga flow and then moves into a weighted section, where you'll hold lunges, seat, and squats while doing arm work. To take a break from the weights, the class moves into a short cardio section, which includes jumping jacks, high knees, and jumping in place. Although it's rare to have cardio in a yoga class, this is the perfect break from weights and yoga poses. The class moves into some more leg and butt-work to help you define your booty and then a cool down with some ab work and stretching, finishing off with savasana.
Hot Power Fusion is another class offered by CorePower and will make you as sweaty, if not more than the other classes. Not only is the heat set to 100-103 degrees, but there is additional humidity to help stretch your muscles even more. This combo class incorporates hot yoga (a lot of Bikram poses) with power yoga, so you'll get a mix of the meditative and calming aspects of yoga, and also some difficult power moves. The class is considered beginner-friendly, but it is still highly demanding and challenging. Towards the end there is some core and ab work, which actually came as a relief after spending majority of the class standing up.
WHAT TO WEAR AND HOW TO PREPARE
Leggings. Leggings. And more leggings. There’s a reason they are called yoga pants, they were made for this. Leggings are form-fitting and slick off sweat, which is perfect when you are non-stop moving and seriously working up a sweat. If you really prefer to not wear pants, then spandex shorts or capris will do the trick. Just in case you forget your yoga clothes, CorePower Yoga also has a great boutique including brands like Chaser, ALO, Goldsheep, Spiritual Gangster. If I didn’t already sell you on their yoga, then their retail selection will definitely help! Also, don’t forget to bring your yoga mat and towel. You can rent a mat for $2 and towel for $1, but if you’re going to become a regular, then definitely be sure to BYO.
Because CorePower has locations all over the country, all of their studios look almost identical. These studios are much more aesthetically appealing (not to mention cleaner) than your average yoga studio. The wide lobby area features a solid retail area with a big check-in desk, which is important because sign-ups are first come first serve. The spa-inspired locker rooms feature showers, lockers, and a vanity area, which provides soap, shampoo, and blow dryers. Although different than other yoga studios, CorePower Yoga still gives off the “yogi vibe” with its soothing music and decor. The actual yoga studios are similar to what you would find at any yoga studio with wooden floors and a mirror in the front of the room.
Memberships give you access to any of their 140 studios with no expiration, which is perfect if you plan on utilizing the three locations in ATL (or taking classes back at home). They also offer student, senior, and military discounts. Oh, and your first week is free... #winning.
