Boxing has become a huge fitness trend. Everyone from Victoria’s Secret models to professional athletes seem to be incorporating it into their workout regimens. Want to get your hook, jab, cross on? Check out The Title Boxing Club on Church Street (two blocks from campus) where you can get your cardio workout in for the week and burn 1000 calories while you’re at it! 

THE SWEAT SCALE

Title Boxing classes are known for their ability to make you break a sweat within the first 10 minutes. The high intensity cardio workout mixes in toning exercises during “active rest” sessions for a full body workout. Each class wraps up with an intense 15-minute ab section, so you’ll definitely feel the burn—as well as the satisfaction—when you walk out. For anyone who loves cardio but hates running on the treadmill: this class is perfect for you.

THE WORKOUT

Each session starts off with a 15-minute warm-up consisting of different cardio and toning exercises targeting different parts of your body. Depending on the instructor and the day of the week, the warm-up may target a single body part, e.g. all leg workouts, with squats, lunges, step-ups, jumps, etc. The warm-up is usually quite intense with each exercise flowing straight into the next one, and will leave you sweaty and out of breath. 

The warm-up ends usually with just over a minute left, which is when you have time to get a (much needed) drink of water and start putting your gloves on. Once you’ve done that, the main event of the class starts: boxing (or kickboxing if that’s the session you’re at!) The class is made up of 8 x 3-minute rounds, each with 4-5 different sets of movements, sometimes building upon the previous one. On busy days, the other trainers will be there, and will come around with mitts for you to hit instead of the bag, and give you specific advice on your technique! The punching can be really straining on your arms and shoulders, but just as the round ends and you think you can have a minute to catch your breath... it’s time for pushups! Each round is followed by a minute of active rest, which can mean anything from burpees to squats to stretching.

After the rounds, there is another 15 minutes of toning—usually abs—to round out the workout. You have about a minute to put your gloves and wraps away, and choose a medicine ball (6, 8, 10 or 12 lbs). In addition to the medicine ball, you may also use the bag for some of the workouts, which is a fun twist! The ab workout wraps the session up effectively, and you definitely feel the burn all over your body when you walk out.

WHAT TO WEAR AND HOW TO PREPARE

While you can wear anything you feel comfortable in, just keep in mind that it is an intense cardio workout and you will get very sweaty! You can borrow gloves from the studio, but you’ll need to purchase a set of wraps ($9) to protect your hands! You can buy them at the front desk and ask one of the instructors to wrap your hands for you!

THE ATMOSPHERE

Title workouts are extremely intense and high energy, and the atmosphere definitely helps you focus and push through. The whole studio is blasting pump up music (think party remixes of all your favorite songs on the radio) to go along with the cardio, and the trainers push you to finish each set all the way to the end by yelling at you through their mics.

CLASS TYPES

Boxing Workout Total body boxing workouts* will have you boxing like a pro. Step into the boxing heavy bag station and get ready for a workout that will prepare you to fight for your fitness.

  • The first 15— Your fifteen minute warm up will get your blood pumping with a complete range of exercises including stretching, jogging, calisthenics, jumping, lunging and squats. You will get ready to hit the bag.
  • 30 minutes on the bag— —The bulk of your workout is set up in three minute rounds that include basic boxing combinations followed by a one minute “active rest.” This gives you a break, while keeping your heart rate up.
  • The last 15— You’ll use workout gear and body resistance to strengthen your core and sculpt your body. Cool down with floor work and toning exercises.

  • You choose how hard or light you hit this boxing workout. Either way, you will burn a great deal of calories and have fun.

    *Requires hand wraps and gloves.
    Kickboxing Workout The kickboxing workout* incorporates kicking and punching for a dynamic cardio exercise routine.

  • The first 15— —The workout begins with a solid stretch to prepare your body for kicking and striking the heavy bag.
  • 30 minutes kickboxing workout— —Once your body is warmed up, your kick boxer trainer will teach you the fundamentals. From front kicks to roundhouses to back kicks, plus jab, cross and hook punching techniques, your legs and arms will tone and strengthen with each punch and kick strike.
  • The last 15— —After your 30 minute kickboxing workout, you’ll do a series of innovative toning and sculpting exercises. With each hour-long kickboxing workout, the pounds and inches will melt away fast.

  • *Requires hand wraps and gloves.
