Calling all fitness junkies looking for something new and challenging to add to their workout routine. City Surf NOLA, which opened a few months ago on Magazine Street, might just be the perfect place for you! Every class offered by City Surf is designed around patented surfboard equipment. Never been surfing or have no interest in hitting the waves? No problem. Here’s THE SWEAT SCENE’s guide to navigating the waters of City Surf NOLA.
THE SWEAT SCALE
If you’re looking to get your heart pumping, muscles fatigued, and clothes slightly damp, then this is the workout for you! City Surf’s Beach Body Bootcamp is a great mix of light cardio and strength training. However, if you’re looking to be drenched in sweat after you leave, then move along.
Every single workout at City Surf is centered around a unique piece of equipment: a surfboard. This isn’t any old surfboard that lies flat on the ground or rides the waves. Each surfboard is elevated off the ground by three black fitness balls, making it tricky to balance on and adding a new dimension to your workout. Traditional workouts focus largely on major muscle groups (glutes, biceps, quads, etc.) however, many overlook the smaller stability muscles. At City Surf, these muscles are targeted because every move requires both strength and balance. Standing on an unstable surfboard is not as easy as it seems—trust me, I have fallen my fair share. But with time, you will feel your muscles getting stronger, and the movements becoming easier.
Beach Body Bootcamp is a combination of strength and cardio, but the main focus of the class is to keep your heart rate up the whole time. Classes vary based on the instructor, but in general, they are organized in an interval format.
Bootcamp classes incorporate 10 minute cardio intervals (which fly by incredibly fast), followed by strengthening exercises. The cardio section involves many different moves from “pop ups,” mountain climbers, and even some moves that require you to move across your entire surfboard. At first, these moves won't seem that difficult, but once you slow down and move on to a strength exercise, you will realize how relieved you are to take a break, and will find yourself beginning to sweat.
The surfboards come with a metal loop at the front and back end of each board. Instructors utilize these loops in the strength portions of class by slipping resistance bands through them. Exercises with these bands can range from bicep curls, shoulder presses, and donkey kicks. Talk about feeling the burn. These resistance bands have no mercy on your muscles. Other strength exercises include squats, lunges, and pushups, which are all done on the board. It sounds tricky, and it is, but with focus and practice you'll improve your strength and balance and become a pro in no time.
WHAT TO WEAR AND HOW TO PREPARE
City Surf requires that you wear sticky socks to all their classes. This helps with your balance on the board. I suggest wearing leggings, as there is a lot of straddling of the surfboard, and a fitted top since there is a lot of movement and plank positions. Make sure you bring a water bottle that is pre-filled! They do not have a water fountain to fill yours up, but they do have cold bottled water available for $1 in case you forget. Also be sure to arrive a few minutes early if you have never been to a class so they can give you a quick (and helpful) tutorial.

The atmosphere of the studio is fun and energizing. Instructors pick their own music and can control it with a remote so they don't have to leave their board—allowing for a constant flow of class. The studio is well lit with large windows at the front that allow for lots of natural light. Two rows of surfboards (14 in total) line the studio with large mirrors on one wall and a bright mural on the other. The wooden beams and white walls give the studio a sort of “beachy” feel. There are two full bathrooms with showers, but bring your own towel!
THE BOTTOM LINE
City Surf is an extremely effective way to tone those muscles that are often neglected. By balancing on the surfboard for the entire class, you will engage the muscles that are required for stability and are hard to train on their own. City Surf has such a wide variety of classes from Bootcamp to Buddha Board (yoga on the surfboard), making it accessible for anyone who's looking to #getsweaty. Just don't be afraid to fall, we've all done it...many times.
