Advantages of Exercise

Everyone knows the physical benefits of working out, but did you know that exercise also combats anxiety and depression, increases energy and alertness, and improves your quality of sleep? Even though we all know these advantages, squeezing in that morning workout or getting to the gym after a full day of classes is often dreaded. Here are some ways to change the dreadful pit in your stomach when you think about heading to the gym:

Get in a routine.

As college students, we are all busy. It is not exactly easy squeezing in time for a nice workout when we have friends, class, homework, and jobs to balance. Finding a time slot in your day and writing it into your daily schedule in advance makes it less stressful to try and fit in some gym time. Once you start going at the same time every week, you won’t even have to think twice about it.

Do what you love.

Go for a run one day, do spin the next, or do a HIIT workout another. It doesn’t matter what you do, the most important thing is that you enjoy doing it. Finding time to workout is hard enough, but not having a workout to look forward to is dreadful. Being excited about a specific fitness class can be a huge motivating factor!

Change it up.

Doing the same workout everyday is not only boring, but makes that exercise easier and therefore slows down results. Switching up your workout keeps your muscles guessing. And don’t be afraid to try something new. The RecPlex offers several fitness classes everyday, which means plenty of new things to try!

Find a partner.

Grab a friend and have fun! Go for a walk or run to the beach, or take a fitness class at the RecPlex. Having a friend with you is not only fun, but is a great encouraging influence because you can both push each other to go further.

Rest it up.

Rest days are extremely important because they allow your body to recuperate from all of your hard work! If you go hard 7 days a week every single week, you’re going to become tired and not be able to perform at your full potential. A good strategy is to plan your busiest day of the week to be your day off, this way you don’t have to stress about getting over to the gym!
