Consider it a more productive reason to head to the mall. Cyc’s Buckhead studio, located in Lenox Square, is a destination that will get your heart pumping and your legs moving faster than any sale Bloomingdales has to offer. We promise.
THE SWEAT SCALE
Though Cyc45 (the studio’s baseline class) is less than an hour, riders need no more to feel that they’ve sweat it out sufficiently. By cycling to the beat, climbing hills, sprinting, jumping and incorporating weights, Cyc45 works speed, endurance, and tones along the way. It’s a win-win.
The class I took (Saturday @ 12 p.m.) was led by fierce "cycologist" Lillian, who led a killer workout that had me and my fellow riders walking out of the studio sweat-soaked. The 45-minute ride began with fast paced sprints at a low resistance (NOTE: Cyc doesn’t use torque or RPMS to measure your effort, rather you count the number of times your turn the red resistance knob from a flat road, and add on turns as you climb up). We then graduated to hills, adding resistance and taking it out of the saddle while still cycling to the beat of the music. Lillian’s playlist included everything from house music to mashups, and you better believe I'm still trolling Spotify for the Bieber vs. Selena Gomez track that she played...
Unlike the studio’s CycLean class, Cyc45 incorporates weights. Each bike is outfitted with two, 2-lb bag weights that are used during the second half of the class. Riders are told to up their resistance so their legs cycle slow while their weights work their arms (but really the whole body). If that sounds like too much or too little, options are available: riders can ditch the weights and keep cycling, or request additional weights to pump up the volume. Lillian gave a shoutout to two riders who were holding 12 lbs in their hands. Let’s just say jaws dropped around the room. The weights section includes bicep curls and tricep kickbacks, among less conventional moves like “volleyball passes” and "basketball dribbles" – in both single and double time. Serious business.
WHAT TO WEAR AND HOW TO PREPARE
We suggest wearing lightweight workout attire (you'll thank us when you're drenched after the first song), and nothing that's too loose (between the jumps, sprints, tap backs, and different weighted moves, the last thing you want to think about is a loose t-shirt getting in the way). Make sure you bring socks – you're welcome to bring your own cycling shoes, or rent a pair from the studio (Cyc bikes are compatible with both Look Delta and SPD shoe clips, but not SPD-SL road cleats).
If you don’t like flashing lights, moments of pitch black-ness, or near-deafening beats (though earplugs are offered at the front desk), this may not be your class. Then again, with 50 bikes in the studio and a pack of your peers seemingly riding for their lives, the energy is on high and it’s hard not to feel a cult-like kinship with your fellow cyclists while you follow along with the beat. Shoes, towels, and lockers are all complimentary, SmartWater at the front desk is not.
Cyc’s Buckhead studio is tucked away within The Forum Athletic Club, a state-of-the-art, 21,000 square foot fitness complex that boasts spacious gym facilities, locker rooms equipped with showers and a sauna (!), two studios, and, of course, Cyc! An added bonus is that riders are given permission to use the gym and facilities for two hours before and after their class! So if you can still lift your arms after class, feel free to pick your poison from the many machines that Forum has to offer.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Cyc45 is a class for those who want to get sweaty, STAT. This is a give-it-your-all workout that invigorates while combining cardio and toning for the whole body. Just don’t expect to feel relaxed or contemplative on your bike – the studio is dark, the music is blasting, and the riders are there to work. A perfect environment to sweat out Saturday night’s toxins or blow off major midterms steam.
