The hottest workout trend in L.A. and NYC has finally arrived in the Cresent City. NOLA meet the Megaformer, a miracle working torture machine that uses springs and pulleys (which you adjust to add and reduce resistance) to work your entire body. Emphasizing slow, controlled movements, the Megaformer will have your entire body shaking in a matter of minutes. Romney Pilates is the only studio in New Orleans to offer this killer workout, so if you’re looking to crank your workout up a notch, the Megaformer “B.L.A.S.T.” (Body  Lengthening And Strength Training) class is definitely for you!

THE SWEAT SCALE

Although this workout is low-impact and slow-paced, many B.L.A.S.T. goers come out of the class drenched. You’ll work the deepest muscles, all the while keeping your heart rate up and melting calories.

THE MACHINE

Megaformer workouts are commonly referred to as “pilates on steroids,” especially due to its heavy weight. The carriage is what holds the weight, which you push or resist on in various exercises during class. There are two platforms, one in the front and back, which you support yourself on. Like a regular pilates machine, there are also straps to work your arms with.

THE WORKOUT

All of Romney’s megaformer instructors receive special training in the Lagree fitness method, so each workout is unique but all follow the same basic format. Most classes involve various lunges, planks, pulses, and other resistance and counter-resistance movements. The instructors guide you through the movements, ensuring your transitions to different positions are smooth and safe. They play high-energy playlists to keep you motivated and distracted as you contemplate what you were thinking coming to class. There’s also no need to worry about stretching; B.L.A.S.T. combines strength-training, cardio, and stretching all in one.

WHAT TO WEAR/HOW TO PREPARE

Wear anything that you might to a yoga or Pilates class and make sure it's something you don't mind sweating in. Ideally your clothes should be form-fitting as you'll be planking and piking and probably don't want your shirt flying in your face. There are no shoes or socks allowed on the Megaformer unless you choose to wear grippy socks. The class only has seven spots, so its recommended to check the Romney schedule and sign up early. Make sure you bring water too, you’ll definitely need it!

THE BOTTOM LINE

There is no doubt that you will be satisfied with your workout after B.L.A.S.T. You'll stretch, sweat, shake and tone and notice results almost instantly.
