Whether you are a yoga newbie, or someone who’s been doing headstands since age 5, hot power yoga is an incredible workout that will leave you feeling energized and focused. Shakti power flow is an intense full body workout that utilizes fast paced flows and balance postures to build strength, improve flexibility and magnify your body’s energy.

THE SWEAT SCALE

While the Shakti studio offers a variety of classes in heated and unheated rooms, the greatest “sweat scene” can definitely be found in the Shakti Power Flow class, which takes place in a heated room of about 90 degrees. It is no joke that you will leave the room looking as if you jumped in pool. The heat combined with the intensity of the class will leave your body sore and in dripping in sweat.

THE WORKOUT

While each instructor has their own style, each class will usually follow a similar format– basic vinyasa flows of Chaturanga, to upward dog, to downward dog (your shoulders will hate you by the end) as well as different routines of poses that are sure to work your abs, arms, glutes, thighs and hamstrings. Some classes may work some parts of your body more than others, depending on that instructor’s focus, but feel free to let them know if there is a specific area you want to work on. However, if you say glutes and abs don’t be surprised if you find yourself in chair pose for two minutes followed by a plank series–Shakti is no joke. There are modifications for all levels so don’t worry if you tried to google translate chaturanga! Shakti creates an extremely supportive and safe community that encourages you to try that arm balance even if you fall on your face (which has happened to me many times…). The class also ends with a peaceful meditation and a cold towel that can only be described as euphoric.

What to wear and how to prepare

Water, water, water!! Since the room is heated, it is super important to come to class hydrated and properly fed to avoid feeling light headed or dizzy. When the class is packed, the room can get extremely hot and humid, so drink water throughout the day and make sure that your bottle is filled at the start of class. Any yoga pants or cropped leggings are perfect to wear paired with a fitted (and preferably sweat-wicking) tank or sports bra.

The Atmosphere

While the heated room can be a little tight, the wooden floors and large glass windows create a peaceful and inviting setting. Shakti definitely understands what a hot yoga studio should be like, as it highlights natural light, fireplaces and incense. But since it can get a little crowded, try getting to class early to make sure you get a prime spot.

Price

Shakti offers great deals for newcomers like the 30 days of $30. You can also purchase 5, 10, 20 and 50 class packs as well as unlimited memberships ($399 for 4-months, $999 for 1 year). Students receive 10% off any class packs as well as a $2 discount for drop-ins. Mats and towels can be rented at the studio for $2 each or you can bring your own. All packs last a full year so don’t worry if you lose steam after a month; you have 11 more to get back into it!

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a great workout and an ever greater sweat that will leave you feeling zen and revitalized, definitely check out Shakti.
