SWEAT SPOTLIGHT: JOANNA SOKOLOVIC

Introducing Joanna Sokolovic, a sophomore at Fairfield U and a spinning instructor at the Rec Complex on campus! Find her teaching on Tuesdays/Wednesdays and get your sweat on in her upbeat and high energy class!

What motivates you to be the best version of yourself each and every day?

I want to improve myself each and every day, whether it’s a new skill or a new fact that I pick up from the classroom. I’m motivated to have healthy relationships with my peers and to always stay curious. I want to live my life to the fullest, and not waste a day away.

What made you want to become a spin instructor at Fairfield U?

During my junior year of high school, I tore my ACL and the recovery was really long. I had to slowly ease myself back into putting weight on my knee, so I started spinning as I found it to be a fun and enjoyable workout that was doable doing recovery. As a spin instructor, I hope to motivate people to lead a healthy, positive lifestyle. I want people to just have fun! Whether they had a bad day, or got a bad grade I want them to have an outlet where they can be stress-free and feel good about themselves.

What is your favorite type of workout music?

Fast paced, high energy music with a good beat. I like EDM just because it gets me really pumped up before teaching a class. I get most of my music from Soundcloud or the dance genre on iTunes.

What is your meaning of being ‘Fit’?

Fit means to radiate positivity all over. There shouldn't be a specific image about how one should look. Being fit means being mentally and physically strong and healthy and able to do things for yourself that make you happy. At the end of the day, you are the one that needs to love yourself the most.

How do you maintain a healthy diet and make time to work out while in college?

It’s all about time management, I make a schedule during the week for myself and I try my best to follow it. During the week, I eat very healthy, and on weekends, I allow myself to go for the sweets. It’s all about finding the perfect balance!

When do you teach? How do I sign up?

I teach weekly classes on Tuesdays at 1PM and Wednesdays at 9:30AM, everyone should come! You can easily sign up online or through the app called ImLeagues.

What are your other hobbies besides spinning?

I like going to the beach, hanging with my friends, finding good places to eat, and reading my Steve Jobs autobiography.

What is in your gym bag?

I always have my Beats wireless headphones (they're perfect for running), some sort of sweat resistant headband, my spin shoes, and a water to stay hydrated!

What are some of your recommendations for post workout snacks?

I try to be healthy after I workout to make my body feel better. My go-tos are fruit, Clif bars, Greek yogurt and granola, bananas, and almond butter.
